First of all, I should say that we have two home countries: Latvia and Germany. I was born in Riga, Günther — in Windischengrün. I work as a psychotherapist, and Günther as a civil engineer.
In the past, we already had some experience with farm work. As a child, I spent my summer holidays with my grandparents in Latgale (Latvia), who had their own vegetable garden and lived near kolkhozes (collective farms in the Soviet Union). Günther grew up on a farm in Bavaria.
And so, about ten years ago, we decided to spend our future life together on the land of my ancestors. Said and done — we began preparations. Fortunately, the kolkhozes did not last, and the land was returned to its owners — and we had a place where we could build our farm. Not just any farm, but an environmentally friendly one: since the 1990s, our land had not been treated with chemical fertilizers. The soil had rested and was waiting for us.
As it turned out, a long and demanding certification process for organic farming awaited us. And all of this as a “side activity” alongside our professional lives. In the end, however, we overcame all the burdens of regulations and requirements — because we truly wanted to become farmers.
Stay with us and find out why we do all this — and why we do it according to organic farming standards.
